In October 2020, a national state of emergency was declared in Paraguay due to thousands of fires. However, the fires were and are set for land reclamation. Therefore, it was forbidden to convert burnt forest areas for agricultural use. Slash-and-burn is still a common but illegal means of deforestation. Paraguay is the second largest supplier of barbecue charcoal in Germany.

It is important for the San Rafael protected area to detect fires quickly. Therefore, donations can help us to acquire a drone for safe monitoring of the protected area. This will also enable us to check that the burnt areas are not being "converted". At the same time, illegal logging can be identified through aerial photography. Pro Cosara also supports the local fire brigade with equipment and during exercises.
