Exactly - there are two varieties hanging on this tree. Autumn apples, which are soon ready for harvesting, and a winter apple variety. The latter is harvested in late autumn and is only ripe for consumption in winter, but can often be stored until May/June of the following year. We could graft different old varieties on each apple tree and thus preserve biodiversity.
